Beaches
Here are the top picks to start your beach exploration. While our beaches are pristine, the visitor does need to beware when the meltemi kicks up. The occasional strong winds and high waves make for great surfing on the Northern shores, but the currents in Ikaria are very strong and can be dangerous even for the most experienced swimmer. If you choose to swim when the seas are rough, always let someone know and keep your eye on the shore. Most of the beaches do not have lifeguards throughout the summer.
Armenistis Beach
The small beach cove in town is perfect for a quick dip before breakfast or dinner as you can pop up to the bars and tavernas right above. It is protected when the winds kick up and has a sand side and a pebble side, depending on your preference. There are a few free umbrellas for shade and a “shower” you can rinse off under.
Livadi Beach
Right next to Armenistis about a 10 minute wlk from the center of town is Livadi Beach. A little mountain river brings some find sand and sea turtles to the beach. It is “unorganized” with a small bar at the far end. Best to bring your own towels, shade and refreshments as loungers are few and far between. There’s a walking path leading down to the beach and a little cove on your left-hand side that is picture perfect. Of note: this beach is a favorite of the more free-spirited (aka nudists).
Messakti Beach
A 15-minute walk from Armenistis is the beautiful beach of Messakti. It is not only sandy with gorgeous blue waters, it has two streams that converge on the beach and form freshwater lagoons that are home to small sea turtles. Parts of Messakti are organized, offering amenities such as loungers and umbrellas for rent, loos and showers, the Bensao and Mamkita beach bars, volleyball and the surf school.
Nas Beach
Nas beach is one of the prettiest beaches on the island. A 10-minute drive west from Armenistis, the small, gorgeous cove with silky sand and turquoise waters is a perfect place to watch the sunset. Just beyond the beach itself, you will discover a small waterfall and stream within the forest… but you’ll also find nature lovers who have taken to camping along the river for decades.
Gialiskari Beach
Also a great beach on the north side of the island, with the characteristic chapel of Analypsis in its small harbor, with all the fishing boats. A magical image! Just a 10-minute drive or 25-minute walk from Armenistis. You can enjoy the small town with its cafes and restaurants.
Seychelles Beach (South Side)
A 50-minute drive from Armenistis is an astoundingly gorgeous beach with emerald waters and imposing rock formations. The beach is bright white and pebbly, but getting to it is an adventure. Most visitors take on the imposing cliff climb down (and back up), but DO NOT WEAR FLIP FLOPS! Alternately, you can take a small boat transfer from the port of Manganitis that runs every hour.
